TENURE/TENURE TRACK - FACULTY/ADMINISTRATIVE POSITION
CHAIRPERSON, DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
The DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATION at San Francisco State
University prepares graduate students for careers as elementary and
secondary teachers, IHE researchers, integrated services specialists,
educational therapists and program administrators serving students with
disabilities. Faculty reflect eclectic and diverse philosophies in
approaches to education of students with disabilities.
The department is large and comprehensive with 19 full-time faculty
and over 400 students. The department offers a range of credential,
certificate, and M.A. programs as well as a Joint Doctoral Program in
Special Education with the Graduate School of Education at the University
of California, Berkeley. Faculty provide leadership, scholarship and
training across the the following programs: oEducational Specialist
credentials, oClinical Rehabilitative Services credentials; oM.S. in
Communicative Disorders (including speech pathology and audiology); oM.A.
in Special Education (with emphasis areas in Mild/Moderate disabilities,
Early Childhood Special Education, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Visual
Impairments, Physical and other Health Impairments, Moderate/Severe
disabilities, Orientation & Mobility, and Vocational Special Education).
Certificate programs are offered in oEducational Therapy, oEarly Childhood
Special Education, oIntegrated Student Specialist, and oVocational Special
Education.
The department administers a Joint Doctoral Program in Special
Education with the Graduate School of Education at the University of
California, Berkeley that provides students with opportunities to work in a
broad range of academic areas on both campuses to pursue roles in
leadership, research and scholarship, public policy, administration, and
teaching. Doctoral studies lead to a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education, with a
concentration in Special Education.
POSITION: Professor and Chairperson. Full time, 12 month,
tenure/tenure track.
SALARY: Commensurate with background and experience.
CLOSING DATE: January 28, 2000. Screening begins February 10,
2000. Position open until filled.
START DATE: August, 2000

PROFESSOR AND CHAIRPERSON, DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATION

QUALIFICATIONS:
Essential
1. Doctorate in special education or a related field.
2. Substantive professional experience which would include
administration, national level research or demonstration
activities, and university teaching.
3. Ability to coordinate department programs in conjunction with
financial management.
4. Demonstrated leadership and expertise in program administration,
primarily at the university level.
5. Continuous record of externally funded research, training, or
demonstration projects related to a specific area of content expertise.
6. Strong evidence of scholarly productivity through publications.
7. Ability to teach graduate level courses across programs of study.
8. Experience in advising doctoral and master's students.
9. Knowledge and skills to collaborate effectively with general
education and other agencies providing services to students with
disabilities.
10. Direct experience with people with disabilities.
12. Ability to collaborate with local school districts, state dartments
of education and related state agencies, and the U.S. Office of Special
Education and Rehabilitative Services.
Desired:
1. Excellent communication skills and ability to interact
collaboratively with individuals with diverse philosophies, values,
cultural/ethnic backgrounds.
2 Knowledge of integrative and transition services for children,
youth, and adults with disabilities.
3. Experience in development of linkages with international programs.
4. Knowledge and experience with various research methodologies.
5. Knowledge of, and appreciation for, all disability services,
including low-incidence programs.
6. Experience in maintaining diverse content expertise and philosphies
within the context of an integrated academic program.
7. Evidence of involvement in policy development at the national level.
8. Knowledge of multi-media and computer-based technology in
instruction and distance learning.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties and responsibilities of the Department
Chairperson are managed within four major categories: Academic Programs,
Students, Faculty, and Administration. General responsibilities include:
1. Assuming leadership in the development and direction of quality
academic programs;
2. Working collaboratively with faculty across disciplines,
departments and schools in academic program planning, review, and
curriculum development and revision;
3. Working constructively with peers and students who embody a
diversity of values, philosophies and cultural and ethnic backgrounds;
4. Fostering collegial and full participation of all members of the
department faculty and staff in recognition that governance is a
joint and cooperative endeavor;
5. Planning, organizing, directing and controlling budgets, schedules,
program reviews, admission strategies and academic offerings;
6. Facilitating the development of research, demonstration and
training projects relating to curriculum, administration, and policy
issues in special education and communicative disorders;
7. Representing and advocating for the department within the school,
the university, the community and the profession;
8. Promoting professional development activities for faculty and
staff; and
9. Mentoring and support of tenure track faculty and lecturers in
scholarship, teaching and research.
10. Teaching one graduate-level seminar each semester.
11. Participating in policy development at the state and national levels.
