NEW TITLE FROM SIGNUM VERLAG

Mesch, Johanna: Tactile Sign Language. Turn-taking and questions in
signed conversations of deaf-blind people. PB.: 3-927731-80-3; xv,
256 pp.; EUR 23,00. Signum Verlag.

Tactile sign language significantly differs from the visual mode of
sign language. Based on conversation analysis of deaf-blind dyads,
this book describes how turn-taking and interrogative sentences are
marked in tactile sign language. Deaf-blind signers are in continuous
contact by holding one another's hands in monologue or dialogue
position. In tactile conversation, non-manual characteristics, the
essential markers in visual sign languages, are effectively replaced
by various hand movements.

NEW TITLE FROM SIGNUM VERLAG

Boyes Braem, Penny and Rachel Sutton-Spence (eds): The Hands are the
Head of the Mouth . The Mouth as Articulator in Sign Languages. PB.:
3-927731-83-8; vi, 325 pp.; EUR 27,60. Signum Verlag.

This book stems from a workshop on the use of the mouth in European
sign languages held at the University of Leiden, in The Netherlands,
in December 1998. It reflects several areas of particular interest
with respect to mouth patterns in sign languages: The meaning of
terms which is not always immediately obvious in this respect, the
use of Notation systems for mouth patterns, the consistency of
mouthings and mouth gestures, especially in relation to the
methodology used as well as situational, regional and social
variation and the linguistic biography of the informant, and the
status of the mouth patterns that come from spoken languages.
