Lane et al.'s article, "Preliminaries to a Distinctive Feature Analysis of
Handshapes in American Sign Language,"  published in Cognitive Psychology
(1976) , names measure T as "information transmitted."  T is determined by
computing a 2x2 matrix ( See p 271).  While it's pretty clear how each
element in the 2x2 is computed, it's not clear how the single scalar value T
is computed from the matrix.

Any insights into how it's done?
