PHD STUDENTSHIP: Processing visual prosody of speech and sign
Applications are invited for a 3-year post-graduate studentship, funded by
the Hearing Research Trust. The planned study will use both behavioural
(linguistic and psycholinguistic) and functional imaging techniques to
investigate questions: sentences which have distinctive prosody in both
signed and spoken language, during speech-reading by oral deaf participants,
and during sign language processing by native signers. The results of this
study will assist in our understanding of how spoken language and spoken
language prosody is processed, as well as providing information about
whether the facial information accompanying questions in signed language is
comparable to auditory and visual prosody in spoken language.
The studentship is available from either October 2004 or February 2005 and
pays an annual stiped at MRC London rates, plus EU student fees.
Applicants should have an MSc in linguistics, psychology, neuroscience or a
related field, knowledge of BSL or another sign language, and knowledge of
deaf people and the Deaf community. Applications from deaf researchers are
particularly welcome. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Bencie
Woll, Tel: 020 7040 8354; Minicom/TTY: 020 7040 8314 or email:
