But that would mean that if I go to a lecture by Joe Blogs who is a 
Deaf native signer of "XSL", then I saw a performance?  I don't think

[But that doesn't mean I'm comfortable yet with the definitions offered 
so far for literacy in a signed language.  Still chewing on that 
concept.]   :-)
