DEAF AND OTHER LIVES; LIVING IN MULTIPLE CULTURES.
September 25 - 26 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
This is a call to contribute papers to this conference, organized by
the Amsterdam School for Social Science Research of the University of
Amsterdam en co-sponsored by the Royal Effatha Guyot Group.
The conference will address three themes
1. Cultural communities in transition, focusing on the changing
environment of cultural minorities, including the Deaf, within
dominant majority cultures. (Key note speaker Dr. Karen Nakamura ,
Anthropology and East Asian Studies, Yale University)
2. Identity and community, focusing on how people, including Deaf
people, create identities between cultures. (Key note speaker Dr. Jan
Kåre Brevik Rokkan Centre, Bergen University, Norway)
3. Origin and development of Deafstudies, focusing on its relationship
with the emancipation of the Deaf community and exploring parallels
with fields like gender studies or black studies. (Key note speaker
Dr. Goedele de Clerck, Anthropology Gent, Belgium)
At the conference three parallel sessions will be organized, one for
each of the three themes. If you are interested in contributing,
please send an abstract of no more than 400 words, before June 15, to h.j.hiddinga at uva.nl

English, Dutch or American Sign Language. Sign language interpreters
will be present during the conference.
