MIM: deaf/Deaf-distinction: origin?

Hello Mim,

Hope you are keeping well.

While you are correct in saying that the Woodwards
(1972) paper did not give a clear explanation on the
distinction between d and D. However Woodwards'
sociolinguistic study placed deaf people into two
groups based on the language that they use - American
Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English.

This purpose was for further research on the
educational field looking at the communication methods
for deaf pupils.

Then Padden and Humphries (1975) politicised Woodwards
(1972) works by labelling a group of deaf people using
ASL with the letter 'D', and the other using spoken
English with small letter 'd'.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Des
