British Sign Language Corpus Project: Postgraduate/postdoctoral  
research associate (linguistics/sociolinguistics)
Funding for 2 years (REF CPRA1b)

Grade 7 Range £28,290-£30,013 + £2,649 London Allowance. Level and  
grade appointed will be dependent on qualifications, skills and  
experience as detailed in the person specification. The post will  
begin in February 2009, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The British Sign Language Corpus Project (BSLCP) is a three year  
project (January 2008-December 2010) funded by the Economic and Social  
Research Council that aims to create a corpus (i.e., a computerised  
collection of annotated language recordings) of British Sign Language  
(BSL), and to conduct corpus-based investigations of aspects of the  
vocabulary, grammar and sociolinguistics of BSL. The project is led by  
the Deafness Cognition and Language (DCAL) Research Centre at  
University College London, with co-investigators and collaborators  
based at Heriot-Watt University ( Scotland ), Queens University  
Belfast ( Northern Ireland ) , the University of Bristol ( England ),  
the University of Wales Bangor ( Wales ) and Macquarie University  
( Australia ).

A well- organised person with a degree in a relevant area and native  
or near-native skills in BSL is required to assist the project  
director in the management of the BSL Corpus Project. Duties include  
assisting the project team with the creation and management of project  
digital video data and metadata, co-ordinating deaf community  
fieldworkers and leading on the data collection, and to be primarily  
responsible for the coding, annotation and analysis of the data for  
corpus-based studies on sociolinguistic variation and language change  
in BSL.

begin in November 2009, or as soon as possible thereafter.
