BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE CORPUS PROJECT: TRANSLATOR/RESEARCH ASSOCIATE -
REF 31/09/W
Grade/Salary £33,432 per annum pro rata
Closing Date 17 April 2009

Contract negotiable, depending upon experience, qualifications and
terms of service (see below). This post is funded on the basis of a
0.6 fte position for 24 months.

The British Sign Language Corpus Project (BSLCP) is a three year
project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council that aims
to create a corpus (ie a computerised collection of annotated language
recordings) of British Sign Language (BSL), and to conduct corpus-
based investigations of aspects of the vocabulary, grammar and
sociolinguistics of BSL.

The project is led by the Deafness Cognition and Language (DCAL)
Research Centre at University College London, with co-investigators
and collaborators based at Heriot-Watt University (Scotland), Queens
University Belfast (Northern Ireland), the University of Bristol
(England), the University of Wales Bangor (Wales) and Macquarie
University (Australia).

A well-organised, experienced service-provider offering relevant
academic qualifications and professional registration (or equivalent)
in BSL/English translation/interpretation is required to assist the
BSL Corpus Project team in the annotation of data for the BSL Corpus
Project. The primary contractual responsibility will be to lead on the
written English annotation of signed data. Further duties include
assisting the project team with the creation and management of project
digital video data.

This work will begin in May 2009, or as soon as possible thereafter
and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2010. Whilst the
position will be managed from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, the
nature of the tasks to be undertaken makes a considerable proportion
of remote working negotiable. Hours are flexible, and work will be
contracted to the equivalent of a 0.6 fte position for 24 months. Job-
sharing or agency-based, service-level arrangements may be applicable.
