A research officer/fellow is required as part of the 'Australian Sign Language (Auslan) Assessment and Early Intervention Strategies Project' which is funded by a grant to Associate Professor Adam Schembri at the National Institute of Deaf Studies and Sign Language at La Trobe University from the Victorian Deaf Education Institute in the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The project aims to (a) create an Auslan developmental scale/checklist and (b) adapt existing comprehension and production tests of British Sign Language for Auslan.

The position

This position is being offered at either Level A or B. As a research officer, you will lead on preparing the literature review, work with the project director to adapt the British Sign Language test materials and create a sign language developmental checklist for Auslan. You will lead on data collection using the assessment tools, and undertake analysis and writing up of the final report in co-operation with the project director. The candidate

To apply as a research officer, you will hold a degree in relevant subject area (e.g., linguistics, applied linguistics, psychology, education) and have a demonstrated understanding of signed/spoken language bilingual approaches to the education of deaf children. As a research fellow, you will hold a postgraduate degree in linguistics, psychology, or education and experience in linguistics, language acquisition and/or educational research. Demonstrated native signing skills or a high level of fluency in Auslan (or related sign language) and a high standard of written English are essential to be considered for either level.
