Some progress in this domain has recently been made within two collaborative EU projects, SignSpeak and Dicta-Sign, where linguists and computer scientists worked together. Both ended early this year. Quite some information is available on the websites:
http://www.signspeak.eu
http://www.dictasign.eu
Where the former aimed at translation from SL video to written text of a spoken language, the latter addressed sign recognition and subsequent re-synthesis.
It is clear that sign language technology still has a long way to go, but one can imagine some applications of what is already possible right now, which is different from say 5-10 years ago.
Best regards,
Onno Crasborn
