Dear all,

I’m pleased to announce two new research-focussed positions in the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics at the University of Birmingham:

A Professorial Research Fellow in Corpus Linguistics
A Birmingham Fellow in Languages and Linguistics
This is part of a broader initiative on the part of the university to recruit high level research-focussed staff in order to build its international research reputation.

Linguistics (in particular corpus linguistics) has been identified as key research priority by the university.

Further information about the scheme can be found here:

(1) Professorial Research Fellow in Corpus Linguistics will be expected to develop an internationally excellent research programme, and will have dedicated protected research time for the first three years. Subsequently they will move to a Chair position within the University of Birmingham at which point they will be expected to take on wider responsibilities relating to learning, teaching, management and administration within the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics.

Further information about the professorial post can be found here:

(2) The Birmingham Fellow in Languages and Linguistics will focus on consolidating an outstanding research trajectory, and also, because the University of Birmingham is committed to excellence in education, Fellows will also contribute to learning and teaching. Not that research into British Sign Language is included in the call as an area of expertise we would like to build on this department.

Further information about the Birmingham Fellowship can be found here:

Robin Thompson, another sign language researcher, is already a Senior Birmingham Fellow in the Department of Psychology here at the University of Birmingham.

Importantly, the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics is planning to broaden its undergraduate offering into a degree programme that will provide, from 2017, a major in either English Language or Linguistics (only a degree in English Language is offered at present).

If you would like to discuss these posts in more detail, I can put you in touch with the Head of Department, Professor Jeannette Littlemore.
