Not only that, the recompiled version would only work on Intel-based
processors (or in emulation), since a substantial part of the SW base code
is written in x86 assembler. And then there's the issue of handling video
hardware.

For it to be a real linux version -- one that is not concerned with the
platform, and would therefore run on Motorola, DEC, and other hardware --
something would need to be re-written to take advantage of, say, XFree86.
The Java implementation of 5.0 (someday!) is probably the best of the
"pure" solutions.
