SignWriting List
December 2, 2003

Dear SW List, and programmers all!
Thank you for your great discussions on GIFs and PNGs...and now there
are more discussions happening behind the scenes...so Dan, to answer
your question...I am working on newer sss right now...In time there
will be the following:

sss-1995.....SignWriter DOS symbols
sss-1999.....SignWriter Java 5.0 symbols
sss-2002.....SignBank for Everyday Use
sss-2004.....SignBank for Research Use

The one I am cleaning right now is the 2002...it is a little messy
because I had to experiment with dictionary sorting routines and now I
know what we need...I have developed two ways of sorting dictionaries
by SSS... sorting for Everyday Use and sorting for Research Use...

Think of the Everyday Use as "phonemic" or "not so detailed"...and
Research Use, I am hoping, will be like the International Phonetic
Alphabet (IPA)...the one we don't use on a daily basis for writing and
sorting English dictionaries, but the IPA is useful nonetheless, for
all kinds of research and categorizing...and I am sure that the IPA has
its own sorting routines for dictionaries...so that is pretty
equivalent to what is happening now in SignWriting...the reason I had
to stop teaching Stefan how to add signs into Everyday Use is that I
needed to test the sorting routines to figure out how to teach it...but
I am soooo happy with this...it is really working and what a relief to
know that we have neither sacrificed simplicity or details...people can
go back and forth between the two databases whatever their needs may
be...

So when the 2002 is ready, Dan, I will post the GIFs and let you guys
do the conversion to PNG...that does not mean I do not want to get PNG
into my daily formatting skills...but right now it will go faster if we
let me stick to the GIFs I get in Photoshop Web Palette...

Val ;-)
