Problems with DOS SW44 Dictionary Creation

Good morning, list!

I've just started typing in some BSL signs to my dictionary, but I'm having
some problems using SWDOS A4.

The main one is that when I enter my first sign in the BSL dictionary (I do
have the country and dictionary codes set to 044 and I can see that it is
using the BSL dictionary) it works fine, but then when I try to save
anything, it crashes with this error:

? Error: Protected file error in file SW044.DIN
  Error Code 1035, Status  0005
PC = 130E: 41A0; SS=2741, FP = 0004, SP = 4BE2

Am I supposed to unprotect the DIN file or is it protected for a reason? I
don't want to take too cavalier an approach to file protection because I
might end up with a corrupt dictionary with a lot of work in it that's
become completely inaccessible. So I thought I'd better ask first!

Thanks for any help anyone may be able to offer.

Sandy
