Dear SW List, and Tini and Jerry -
I am so glad you are enjoying writing songs...You are contributing much
to the online SignWriting community!

Signing songs gives hearing people a connection with songs they know,
and teaches sign vocabulary. Most songs are signed in English grammar,
which places ASL signs in English word order...like Signed English, or
other variations such as PSE (Pidgin Sign English)...That is because
most songs are translated from the English, and people want to fit it
to the music...And there is nothing wrong with that...if it brings us
all closer together...and it does!...;-)

Once an interperter explained to me, that it is not guaranteed that all
Deaf people will necessarily understand signed songs in Signed
English...If the Deaf person is "very ASL", and does not know English
well, then the songs are pleasant to watch, but not necessarily
meaningful...On the other hand, there are many Deaf people who do
understand them...so it varies a lot...I am sure our Deaf list members
can explain this better than I can...Do you enjoy signing songs in the
Deaf Community?...;-)

It is rare to find a song that is signed in true ASL, with a different
grammar than English...We do have one SignWriting document of a song in
ASL that was signed by Deaf ASL teacher David McKee....and I believe
that is in ASL grammar...(as best as is possible to fit with the
music)...You can download that document on the web:

Other than that one, Tini, the field is wide open, and we defintiely
can use more songs written in SignWriting!

If there is anyone else who has songs to contribute, in any signed
language, they are most welcome too...
