[sw-l] Re: update on Condega, Nicaragua

The London organization (CIIR) that has been funding the audiologist in
Condega informs me that this individual will no longer "play any role in
determining the nature of deaf education provided in the school." Further,
his term expires in 7 months; after that this organization will no longer
have any involvement in Condega. (That last part is a shame, actually.)

CIIR recognizes that there are divergent viewpoints regarding Deaf
education, an area of expertise they claim to know little or nothing about.
Basically, CIIR merely funds development workers as requested by the local
service organization. Perhaps --- but I stand by my conviction that the
first rule is "do no harm".

Anyway, my objective was to make it very clear to the local administrators
and new teachers at the school that the opinions/directions of the CIRR
funded development worker were not widely accepted by international
linguists and educators. I also wanted to be sure that the opinions of the
Deaf ex-teachers would be recognized.

What happens next, of course, depends entirely upon money. Isn't that
always the way?

I want to thank those on the list who expressed support and concern.
