Hello Kathleen!
Interesting sign...And I am glad that you showed it to us! The In- 
between symbols are usually used, if the hand is held between the arm  
and the side of the body, but when just scratching the sides of the  
body, they may not be necessary...Take a look at the attached diagram  
of SignBank for the ASL sign for MONKEY...maybe your sign is  
different? Can you describe it in words a little?

Here is the ASL sign. The signer on the video is from German- 
Switzerland! Example from SignBank:
