Hello Juliette and Charles!
Yes. Exactly. You know your own language, French Sign Language, so  
you know that signs usually finish closed, like number 2 in the  
attached, so of course you can assume that when you write.

But for research, when we are writing foreign signed languages, like  
Ethiopian Sign Language, in Africa, that is soooo different, then I  
would be afraid not to write the second position until we get to know  
the language well...so it depends on what you are doing and why you  
are writing!
