Here is how to decide on shortened spellings...

1. FORMAL, detailed writing
First, write the sign with EVERY detail you can think of, including  
the beginning and ending position.

2. SIMPLIFY the writing
Second, based on the formal writing, decide what symbols can be  
thrown out. Can readers still understand the sign with those symbols  
removed?
