SignWriting List
October 18, 2006

Dear SW Listers!
There are five Lists that are housed and managed by software located
at Valencia Community College in Orlando, Florida:

They include:

SLLING - Sign Language Linguists List
SW-L - SignWriting List
TeachASL List
Interpreter's List
and another one from Canada

Located here:
http://majordomo.valenciacc.edu/cgi-bin/majordomo

And all this is donated to us...we are fortunate!

However, paradise is now limited, because four problems have developed:

1. Huge Amount of Spam... is hitting the List management software
daily...it is a shame, because it is clogging the distribution of
messages to List members...

2. Old Email Addresses... that were abandoned by users, are throwing
returns back to the List management software, clogging up
distribution of messages to the good email addresses...When a List
member abandons an old email address, you need to delete it from the
Lists that the old address was on...out of courtesy to those who want
to be on the Lists...

To delete an old address, go to:
http://majordomo.valenciacc.edu/cgi-bin/majordomo

3. Full Mail Boxes....people who have good working email addresses,
go away and do not check their email for months at a time...and those
messages that state that Your Mail Box is Full, are being sent back
to the List management software, and that is also clogging the
List...so if you use Hotmail, please check your mail occasionally and
empty your mail box too, so the List managers are not being deluged
with messages saying your mail box is full!

4. And sadly, some domain names, like aol.com and others, are so
desparate themselves with these problems that they block the List
messages sometimes...but that is partly due to the fact that people
need to clean out their full mail boxes..

So what is the result of all this?

Only SOME messages are making it to the Lists and others never make
it into your mail boxes. This means you need to check the Archives
more, but not all messages are making it to the Archives either!

My conclusion?

We can continue to post small SignWriting diagrams to the List, and
also SignText and SignPuddle email, but no large photos or large
diagrams like before...any diagram that is over 20k is not posting
and the entire message is lost...

Just thought I would tell you about some of my frustrations as the
manager of the SW List!!

More soon (without diagrams ;-))

Val ;-)
