Hi Stuart and everyone -

Thanks for this question...When we have space enough, writing  
repeated movement by repeating the movement symbol itself, works so  
well, and is read so well, that whenever possible let's continue to  
use that...

But having said that, if a symbol can be found that cannot be  
confused with anything else, that would be fine...but it has not been  
developed yet...

For example, the quick example you mentioned above with the Plus  
Symbols, would be grasping something three times, a little like the  
sign for EARRING (shown repeating twice below) :

So let's keep talking about it...

One of the problems with using an abstract symbol is that is assumes  
some knowledge of the language, but that is ok for those who know the  
language anyway!

Let me show you the Norwegian sign for LITERATURE...isn't it a  
terrific sign? I love it, but it is hard to abbreviate this one,  
because only one hand opens multiple times...
