Cherie, what attachment did you try to send me?  No matter how I tried to open it, I always came up with a blank screen.  It was supposedly a GIF file, but something about my computer; I just couldn't view it.  If it was important, could you please try sending it again in a different format?  Thanks. I'm going to have to find a copy of the
book to remind me how exactly the cat was balancing them.
There is an umbrella in there too, complicating
things.  In the first couple pictures the fish is on the umbrella,
and the boat is on the index finger held out at roughly a 45 degree angle.
Then we add the rake, and the umbrella is still there.  Fish is on
the rake, boat is still on the index finger, little man on the bow of the
boat.  Since the umbrella is never mentioned, even though it is pictured,
I left it out.  

The cat isn't pictured while putting
the tray on his foot, is he?
Not putting it down there,no, but it
is shown already balancing on his toes.

Kelly Jo, some of the things I've written are based on the -picture- in
the book, not necessarily what the words say, or what I think is logical.
 (A cat in a hat with two pet Things flying kites inside a house?
 Come on...   ::smile::  Hey, I never said Dr. Seuss
was logical!  I was just trying to write what I saw on the video .
. .)  In fact the balancing of the fish and boat on the L hand
is NOT what I signed in the video, but it IS what is pictured in the book,
and what I meant to sign.  And I can balance things on an L hand--
I just now did it with two post it note pads...  ::smile::  

Ah, I understand!  I remember now, that he did have an "L"
hand in the book (I don't have a copy of it with me to refer to, so I didn't
even think about that).  Using the "L" hand isn't the problem;
my problem was the angle of the hand, or more precisely, the angle of the
finger.  Now that I realize you'd meant to follow the pictures, I'm
going to have to find a copy of the book to remind me how exactly the cat
was balancing them.  Not a problem, I just needed to know that.  I'll
revise my rewrite after I have a chance to look at the book.  Incidentally,
he wasn't balancing the fish on his thumb, was he?  I had real trouble
reading the fish balancing. . . there was a Right-hand arrow but I couldn't
move my right hand into that position, and then it looked like the contact
symbol was on the thumb . . . I watched that segment several times before
I decided on how I would write it!

As for the angle of the hands for the tray...  go get a tray and put
a glass of milk on it...  now bend over like you're going to balance
it on your foot...  What angle are your hands at?  Its hard to
see in the video, I have gone frame by frame thru that section multiple
times and can't see it clearly, but that is the angle I am trying to write,
probably unsuccessfully.  I think the wrist flex/rotation thing has
shaken my confidence.  I -thought- I knew what I was doing!  It
wouldn't be so hard if I used a different handshape, a flat O maybe...
 its the A handshape that makes it difficult.


I think it's difficult no matter what . . . but I don't think I'd have
my HANDS at much of an angle, because I'd want to keep the tray as parallel
to the floor as possible.  Yes ...  I just tried the experiment
with my lap desk as the tray (not that I could balance it on my foot anyway;
I put my foot up on a chair so I wouldn't fall over! ::smile::), and my
hands were definitely parallel to the floor and with each other; half-and-half
from the Top View.  (My WRISTS definitely bend because my ARMS are
at an angle, but I keep my HANDS as parallel to the floor plane as I possibly
can.)  I'll see if I can get someone to get a picture of what I mean.
 It probably won't be until later tonight, though.  The cat isn't
pictured while putting the tray on his foot, is he?

Hi Cherie & all -
I haven't had any time for editing lately, but I thought I'd take a stab
at writing this one.  I've written my take on the part from "fish"
to balancing the tray on the foot.  I made a couple of minor changes
to some of the other signs, too.  For the foot motion, I've written
the hip line and the raised right leg with the foot on the end without
a movement symbol; and I changed the movement to two short double-stemmed
arrows because I didn't see much motion when you put the tray down (plus
it's easier to place the smaller arrows when there's so much going on).
 I also changed the orientation of the handshapes holding the tray
because it looked on the video like your hands were pretty close to straight
horizontal there.  It's in SignPuddle as "KJ - Cat in the Hat
9"; you can see the other changes there in "balancing the fishbowl",
"and", and "balancing the ship".

On the subject of the "balancing" signs, let me explain why I
made the handshapes vertical even if your hands weren't exactly in that
position.  It's because they are "balancing" signs, and
you can't balance something on a diagonal finger.  So, even if you
couldn't make your hands vertical as you reached across your body (and
I thought you came pretty close), I felt them to be more vertical than
diagonal.

I think that's all I have to say about that . . . my version of "and"
is just an alternative suggestion.  Either way works . . .

A major challenge in this one--  When the cat says he can hold the
milk on a dish, I pick up my right foot, and through constructed action,
place the tray with the milk on the foot, while I balance on the other
one.  In the signwriting, I showed the torso movement, but not the
foot movement, cuz I don't know how....  Does it need to be there?
 There are several spots where torso action is important, and I am
not sure I'm doing it correctly... 

I also had a devil of a time with the handshape/orientation for the tray
itself.  It doesn't look right any way I tried it.  The palms
are facing each other, thumbs forward away from the body, knuckles aiming
mostly toward the ground and forward.
