Dear friends,
I have decided to bite the bullet and put together the SWLSC for October of 2009.
SignWriting Linguistics Society Conference
October 2009
Kendall Conference Center
Gallaudet University, Washington, DC
To do so, we will need approximately $7,000 for meeting space + around $5000 for interpreters. This does not cover individual housing or travel. This covers two parallel classes and room for poster presentations.
In order to produce this conference, we will need a deposit of $2000.00 by the beginning of September 2008 for October of 2009.
We are setting the registration for $120.00/person, not including housing (expected to be around $140/night/room with two beds), and expect around 75 people, including presenters.
I am looking for sponsors at $200 each who will be listed in the program. Underwriters for $500 or more are also welcome.
This is currently a private venture but is expected after this conference to be applying for 501(c)3 educational status.
Registrations, sponsorships, or underwriting can be sent to:
SignWriting Lingustics Society Conference
c/o Charles R. Butler III
3205 Kimberly Road
Hyattsville, MD 20782
All moneys will be put in escrow and returned if the full deposit is not achieved by the end of August 2008. I will be setting up a web site specifically for this conference within the week.
My hope is to have two tracks of presentation and one of posters.
1) SignWriting for Everyday Use intensive. 2-day course in reading and writing sign writing. Basic introduction. Primary language examples will be ASL, but examples from other languages, such as LIBRAS, and British will be included to show that any signed language can be written.
2) Linguistic Examples from presenters: These are envisioned as 30-minute presentations with 15 minutes for questions, and 15 minute break throughout the day, starting at 10 am and ending at 6 pm. We will have room for 16 presenters.
3) Poster session to illustrate signwriting in linguistic research and instruction. We will have room for between 12 and 18 posters (this is a space of 2 meters wide by 1 meter high, so up to about 4 panels.)
The Kendall Conference Center is located on the grounds of Gallaudet University Campus in Washington, DC.
