Handwriting

Yes, yes, Stuart, you say it so well!
To me, handwriting SW in its current form feels VERY much like writing
in Hebrew when one must use the block letters, write in all the
vowels, and include those picky grammatical marks. Much easier to use
Hebrew cursive!
I use a lot of handwritten SW for recording vocabulary in ASL class,
and for writing down songs in ASL when I'm interpreting for my chorus.
(My ASL consultant signs rather quickly when I'm learning a new song
from her; it's been great transcription practice.)
I've got shortcuts of my own (see my posting from July 08 with
attached "Over the Rainbow" rendition), but it does not yet flow as
easily as writing Hebrew cursive.
What I do love, however, is that a Deaf buddy of mine, who does
theatrical interpreting himself, can read my handwriting without
having really studied SW! I think there's more wiggle room than people
realize for an imperfectly- or partially-SW text to nevertheless be
understandable to an ASL-fluent person.
Best,
Kim from Boston
