I don't SW by hand much, but I don't write English by hand much any more too. But I can if I need to! It's nice to have the option, and it is likewise, nice to have that option in SW.Natasha Escalada-Westland, M.Ed. (D/HH), Macromedia Cert.www.westlandasl.com

As for me, I have a lot of practice writing by hand with the transcriptions I've been doing... I find it easiest to have the DVD playing fullscreen while I write the signs in a notebook, and then I put them into SignPuddle. I don't SignWrite as fast as I write English (but that might be partly because I erase and rewrite, and erase and rewrite until I feel it's right); but then, I can't SignPuddle as fast as I can type English, either. Still, most of my SW is by hand first, and then on the computer.

I think that this discussion has been very interesting. Mainly because my sister and brother-in-law have been using SignWriting more and more. In fact, my brother-in-law just showed me a hand written collage of writings in which he is practicing. He had called me on the video phone to see if he was writing signs correctly. He also showed me a hand written note from my sister to him. They are both at the stage in learning where they look up the words in the dictionary, which is quite normal for beginning. As I was writing this, my brother-in-law called me back to ask me how to write a sign that was not in the dictionary. He had some difficulty, but he will get the hang of it. I just think it is interesting he is mostly writing by hand, which is what we have been talking about.
