Norway to recognize Sign as official language

That is right. What has happened yesterday, was that a 'white paper' from the administration/government about Norway's language policy and the making of a new Law of Norwegian Languages was presented by the minister for Culture and Church. This will pass the parliament, and will make Norwegian Sign Language one of the official languages of Norway. Sign language is already recognized in education, and Sign interpreters are paid for by the state whenever a Deaf person ask for one (and one is available). This new bill recognizes Norwegian Sign Language as 'a real language, a full language, and a Norwegian language'. It will make the state pay for at least one full time consultant at the national language board to help secure this language, nurture and research. It actually puts Norwegian Sign Language on the same footing as the two written forms of spoken Norwegian. The official press release, written in New Norse, can be found at:

But from what Iroald had written, I understood that the Norwegian Sign Language is not recognized yet but just under this recognition process.

That is great, Ingvild.Very good thing to know.It is a great step to sign language, not only in Norway I think.Does anybody know how many countries have already done that?I know that some of them do not recognize even their oral language asofficial, but what about those that do it?Here in Brazil, sign language is considered the second officiallanguage of the country since 2002.RegardsRodrigo
