I know you are on Linux. You could try bringing in the pictures into  
Inkscape (an opensource vector program) and try to create a vector  
image of the sign itself.  That's one idea.  Adobe Illustrator is a  
similar commercial program for Mac or Windows. That would avoid  
pixellation if it is in a vector format.
