Actually the direction that the fingers are pointing is determined by  
the palm shading. The fingers in the handshape are used to show what  
the handshape is. I know, confusing. ;-) I just takes time getting  
used to just reading and writing it. It is really all intuitive, which  
we know can defy all known logic at times. Just gotta practice seeing  
correct writings and it will click. :-)
