Fwd: [sw-l] Hello from Portugal!

I am so excited that there were friends from Brazil.  I worked with them and they have been such pioneers in SW throughout the world.  I am so glad that your class was succesful.  Perhaps we can build on that success here.  I am talking to a linguist next weekend who is working on a major database that we hope to present at a conference next Spring, and I hope we can build on that for a Sign Writing conference here in the Washington DC area next fall.

Well, the workshops (there were more than one!) are now done. All together I would say that there were about 50-60 people, most of which were Deaf. It was great. I have added their sign for Portugal which is nothing like what we have been talking about. But I´m not that surprise about that.

It was really interesting to have it go from ASL to LGP as well as Portugese. So all together there were three interpreters(!) I tried to cover as much as I could as well as answer their questions. In fact, the morning group seemed to be curious about your life in general since you were in Denmark, but are an American. So I went to your valeriesutton site and they were even more amazed that you had health issues growing up, but worked to be a dancer. They thought that it was interesting that you pushed through challenges even as they have to. For that they have a lot of respect for you. (Amilcar who is one of the deaf interpreters for me wanted to make sure I remember to tell you that. SMILE)

I have told the two groups about the SW list, so I hope that they will post introductions and questions. I know that several of them are afraid of their English, but I told them they can write in Portugese -- or even have a video clip of them signing, but most don´t have webcams with their computer.

I just wanted to let you all know that I am in Portugal safe and sound. The people here are very interested in SignWriting, and we have some here from Brazil. Tomorrow is the first workshop. Actually, now looking at the time it is after midnight, so it is today. It seems so weird since it is still Tuesday afternoon back home in the States. I guess I better get to bed so that I am not drooping while I am giving a workshop. Hope to drop a line now and then. Thinking of all my SignWriting friends. Good night.

Good night, Adam!

And thank you for this message...it is so amazing to think of you writing from Lisbon, Portugal...

Have a wonderful workshop tomorrow (or today ;-)...

Please send our best wishes to everyone there...

If participants want to post a message to the SignWriting List, they are very welcome to do so...

Val ;-)

PS. I had fun trying to write the sign for Portugal...the one that rubs down the center of the face is a unique sign and I ended up putting six different ways to write the sign in the Portuguese SignPuddle Dictionary...take a look:

Portuguese SignPuddle

Here is one that I like, but I look forward to finding out how people in Lisbon would prefer to write it...
