Hello Irina!
It is so wonderful to meet you. Thank you for joining the SignWriting
List and welcome!

Our List includes members from 20 countries or so....You are one of
the few from Portugal...smile...I hope you can start writing some
Portuguese signs in SignPuddle and then share them with our List. We
can learn together that way.

I am happy to know you are interested in teaching SignWriting in
Portugal...teachers are needed. Portugal is new to SignWriting, so you
can play an important role introducing the writing system in your
country. And yes, let's start learning together here on this List, on
the internet. It is possible. I know many people who have learned
SignWriting this way and they are teaching it now. There are also
SignWriting teachers in other countries in Europe, such as Spain,
Germany, Norway, Belgium and Switzerland, so later, if you are
interested, I can put you in touch with them too...Several of them are
here on the SignWriting List as well...

But let's start learning here on the List for now....

---------

1. To start learning, I would suggest downloading 2 free textbooks on
the web:

Lessons in SignWriting Textbook in English and ASL
http://www.signwriting.org/lessons/lessonsw/

Le??es SignWriting Textbook in Portuguese and LIBRAS
http://www.signwriting.org/lessons/lessonsw/Portuguese.html

There are also textbooks from Spain and Germany if you are interested.

Start reading those books. Explore the Lessons section on the web:

Lessons in SignWriting
http://www.signwriting.org/lessons

----

2. View Lessons in SignWriting Videos on the web
http://www.signwriting.org/video/lessons/

-----

3. Start trying to add signs in SignPuddle:

Portuguese SignPuddle
http://www.signbank.org/signpuddle/index3.html#sgn-PT

There is instruction for SignPuddle on this web page:

Help for SignPuddle
http://www.signbank.org/signpuddle/help

or write again to ask how to get started...

------

4. And most important, start asking questions here on the SignWriting
List. Your questions are always welcome...

Adam is returning home to Southern California tomorrow night...I am
picking him up at the airport. I am really looking forward to learning
about his trip, and I am sure he will be happy to know we are already
in communication on the SignWriting List together...(I live in San
Diego, and Adam lives around three hours north by car, in a city north
of Los Angeles...He is a student in Deaf Studies at the California
State University at Northridge (CSUN) that has a National Center on
Deafness there...)...

And I assume you live in Lisbon?...smile...

So keep posting - and thanks for writing!

Val ;-)
