SignWriting List
April 21, 2010
Hello Ingvild, Honza, Adam, Cherie, Kelly Jo - everyone!
Thank you for your messages about the video. It is obvious that we all have different experiences on viewing videos...I guess the viewing of videos on computers has not become that standardized yet, although it is getting better.
I remember once someone from the Czech Republic (not Honza, but another co-worker) sent me a video to view, and I could not view it unless I downloaded a new version of QuickTime or something like it, that was widely used in Europe - I was so surprised that there were so many different video players and each one has different requirements.
And there are two different issues in these messages...one is viewing the video I posted on the web...that is a totally different issue...Adam fixed one line of code for me, and presto, everyone can view that on the web now - that is great!
It is at http://www.SignWriting.org
The other issue is receiving the videos through our SignWriting List - I was concerned the new Listserve software would limit the amount of data size we could send to each other, and videos are one of those issues that are important to us...so that is why I asked and I guess most of you could at least receive the file, which means that the SignWriting list software is allowing us to send large amounts of data which is good, but then each person's computer had various issues with viewing that attachment once you received it...
Regarding the viewing of videos on your own computer...for me personally, I use a Mac and I use a program that comes with the Mac called "Apple Mail"...it is my email software and when I receive videos from the List, that are in a format my computer can read, I actually see the video directly inside my email message - it is a fantastic experience and I wish I could give you all the same experience...
But there are times when I cannot read a video sent too...so we are all in the same boat...
Are there any suggestions as to how we could standardize the video experience together? What are the video formats that are the best, do you all think, that would make it possible for us to all communicate by video better? Once we establish what video players we all use, maybe we can suggest certain video formats for the List communication...
I have QuickTime and Windows Media Player, and Real Player, and MPlayer ...probably others too...I have no idea what players are the standard used around the world...
Val ;-)
