SignWriting List
October 20, 2011

Hello Andre!
I am glad you can work with the new SignWriter Studio. I plan to use the program, coordinating it will SignPuddle 1.6 online and with the PersonalPuddle 1.6 later...

In SignWriter Studio, you can open the SignEditor for a sign in the dictionary, by clicking on the sign you want in the dictionary, and it becomes blue (for people who are not blind)...it becomes highlighted when you click on the sign in the dictionary. Can you see it highlighted?

Then, double-click with your mouse on the highlighted sign, and it takes a minute and then it opens a second window for the SignEditor (with that one sign in it, so you can edit it) -

Once you are in the SignEditor, here is what to do:

1. There is a list of symbols to the left sidebar of the SignEditor Window.

2. Click on the All Tab at the top of the left sidebar.

3. A listing of all the seven SignWriting symbol categories will appear under the ALL tab.

4. There are two ways to see more symbols, under each category...you can click on the tiny PLUS symbol that is to the left of each symbol, OR you can double-click on the symbol itself and all the sub-categories will be listed for you.

5. Let us imagine you double-clicked on the Hand category, and you now have a listing of all of the Hand symbols groups. Click on the Plus symbol next to a Group Symbol, or double-click on the Group Symbol, and it will give you a listing of all of the symbols in that group.

6. Once you highlight the Hand symbol you want, the symbol will appear in another little box at the top in the middle section of the SignEditor. Then you can click on buttons to change the Palm Facing color. You can click on arrows to change the Palm Facing rotation and whether it is parallel to the Wall or Floor. Choose a double-stemmed arrow to place the symbol parallel with the Wall or choose a single-stemmed arrow to place the symbol parallel with the Floor. Once the symbol changes as you want it, you can drag it to the SignBox and manipulate the symbol further.

Jonathan - one point I need to make. Unfortunately, symbols are not "Right" or "Left". SignWriting symbols can be either "Right" or "Left" depending on the choice of the writer - Can you replace the words "Right" and "Left" with "Clockwise" and "Counter-Clockwise" or another two words that will feel good to you? - Like - CW and CCW, or "Regular" and "Mirror" or "Flop" - or whatever term feels good for you - Some people use numbers like 0 and the flop of that in numbers ;-)

Many thanks!

Val ;-)

It tells me to open another module and then when I do it either tells me that that module is not working yet or there are no signs written there - I realize this seems like a silly problem because I should know better - I have seen the program working well before and I really loved it, so I have great hopes we can reach that stage again -

Go to Modules/Dictionary in the menu. Type in a word or part of a word to search in the dictionary in the Gloss Search text box. If you leave it blank and press enter, you will get a full list of everything in the dictionary. If you double click on a sign writing you will get the SignWriter Editor.

I read "There are currently no entries in this file. To continue, choose an option from the module menu". I clicked on OK. There are dictionary, document and signlists from the module menu. I chose a dictionary. I read "Unhanded exception has occured in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately". I clicked Continue. In SignWriter Studio Dictionary, I cannot see a sign image or symbols. I tried to click double on signwriting (I couldn't find it), I did not get the SignWriter Studio Editor.
