SignWriting List
September 29, 2013

Hello Trevor -
I am glad to know you like the footer, Trevor.

It is a pleasure to hear from you again after so many years. I am grateful to you, that you have archived all the SignWriting List messages for so many years on your email programs and computers. In the past, we lost some Archives (a section of Archive 4) because they changed the SignWriting List to a new server at Valencia College years ago, and in the process of that move, a portion of Archive 4 was lost. We were lucky that the SignWriting List was being mirrored on another separate web site called LinguistList.org, which is our Archive 3…so the lost messages in Archive 4 fortunately were not lost in Archive 3. But nonetheless, I worry sometimes…what would happen if LinguistList.org stopped serving the world? So many important Lists would lose their Archives…including ours:

So to know you have a backup, Trevor, of all the messages from way back, is a good feeling. May I ask, how much work would it be for you to bundle all the archived messages you have, and send them to me privately at sutton at signwriting.org ? Is that even possible?

I do not want to burden you, but this would be really cool - If your Archives are really going back to 1999, and it was not hard to send them to me, I could re-post them as Archive 5 in the SignWriting List Archives, on our web site, and that would preserve them on our site no matter what other sites do in the future...

If I am opening a can or worms to ask you for this, then just say "no" - Technology is always harder than it sounds at first thought - If there are any costs, please tell me -

Is there anyone else who has been saving SignWriting List messages all these years and feels it would be easy enough to bundle them and send them to me?

Val ;-)

Apple Mail gives slightly more by default and the recipient can request more of those hidden lines to be displayed. I checked the headers line on your email and the following lines are included:

There is a second archive on one of my Linux machines when I was subscribed under a different email address. There might even be some earlier messages stored on an ancient neglected Windows 3.1 machine I used until 1999. ;-)
