SignWriting List
August 3, 2014

Hello Claudia, Fabrizio, Steve, Andre, Adam, Charles and everyone!

Thank you, Claudia and Fabrizio, for pushing the Donation Button to help pay for the costs of publishing the proceedings of the SignWriting Symposium… That is a great help and I also appreciate your information about how your Universities work in Italy and France, and how you need published proceedings for your Curriculum Vitae (CV), very much like others need Certificates verifying that they had presented…So we do realize this…

I was looking for some of my old write-ups about the SignWriting Symposium, because I know I mentioned back in the beginning, that we were planning to publish a book of the Symposium Proceedings, and yes of course it will have an ISBN number...Our organization, the Center for Sutton Movement Writing (CSMW), has under its umbrella, a publishing arm, called the SignWriting Press, and the SignWriting Press (under CSMW) has ISBN numbers ;-)

Here in the United States, our government has certain laws related to organizations called “non-profits”. Every country has different laws related to charitable organizations. Here in the United States there is a difference between a “payment" and a “donation", so I need to create a new web page that has both a Payment Button and a Donation Button available. I assume there is no problem with you getting reimbursed by your University, if I send you the proper paperwork, which I will try to do today.

One of the reasons SignWriting is successful is because we are touching so many professions and circumstances…We want to reach out to both academic institutions like Universities, and also to reach out to individuals who cannot afford to pay for anything…and to give them a free experience of sharing information.

So I need your guidance to give you what you need for your professions and circumstances -

I see it this way:

The Proceedings of the SignWriting Symposium 2014 will be published in 4 ways:

1. Presentation Web Archive pages that store all of the papers, videos, slides and abstracts, and author bios, remaining on the web for anyone to access and read any time, on SignWriting.org/symposium

2. Individual videos of each presentation, recorded LIVE online in Google Hangouts, with captions and interpreting, will be available on YouTube and placed on each Presentation web page.

3. Complete video recordings of the entire SignWriting Symposium 2014, captioned and interpreted, will also be available on YouTube and on SignWriting.org…

4. A published E-Book of the 2014 Proceedings, available for download, will be available for download and Print on Demand. (maybe we could charge for this?) (would that be acceptable?) I usually give everything for free! ;-)

Every one of the 4 items above are large jobs. So we do needs funds to pay for a staff of people to provide these services… but anyone who cannot afford to help will not be burdened either…

Thank you for caring everyone, and I will answer Andre’s message about advertising funds soon - which is another avenue for income - taking in ads -

Regarding fund raisers…I will need people’s help with that - I have done fund raisers before in the local area and we never made money but only broke even - so if we can do a fundraiser that actually raises money that will be terrific!

Val ;-)

It is just a good solution to allow the members of an institution to pay for the service you gave them, and it will be on the conscience (and the wallet) of everyone to see if they can pay.

Manufacturer of deaf material would be interested (alarm system, alarm clock). Closed-cationing companies for TV also have an interest. Telecom companies also have interest (phone companies that provide translation service for Deafs). It would take some thinking on how much you would charge them. Not too cheap and beeing caught with low value image.

The transcripts needed for captioning are not a script…it is exactly what was really spoken…so that deaf people or others reading the captions can know what was said, at the exact timed minute it was spoken -
>
> In the case of your captioning transcript, Erika, I introduced you and I interrupted you and asked you questions…my ramblings have to be captioned too - so the Deaf person reading the captions knows what was said - they can’t read our lips very well - remember I was in a tiny little box most of the time ;-))

Perhaps the editing and captioning is something I could get a group of middle school students to work on as a service learning project? I will also try to involve other teachers with ASL students and Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to join us. Contact me with details and I will work on grants and donations to make this happen over this school year!
