hi Val

it's been a long time.... I've always been on the list but our association www.signecriture.com is not very active....

my only contribution is to write the different signs in the MINI DICO (on page in the Swiss federation of the deaf Journal called FAIS-MOI SIGNE).... for example.... see below....

otherwise the association is "sleeping"
We will participate in what is called "SALON DE LA FORMATION" (SALON DU LIVRE) in Geneva beginning of may and present a few games using SignWriting.... as the theme this year is "Enjeux langues - Langues en jeux"

I'll try to give you some news of this event....

PS for CLAUDIA: I'd love to meet when you come to Switzerland..... contact me privately (anne-claude at famillegirod.com)

I'll come to Losanne in july for DH conference (http://dh2014.org/) where I'll present another part of my work on SW... maybe we can meet there to speak a little bit about SW in Switzerland... I met Penny BoyesBraem 3 years ago (at the conference to remember Elena Pizzuto). I told her I'll send her my PhD thesis but... I allways forgot to... shame on me!

>>> ----------------------
>>> ----------------------
>>> Sign Languages (SL) are only face-to-face and cannot be represented by any writing system developed for spoken languages. We examine SignWriting, a notation system for LS composed of "glyphs" (graphics units) that fit together in a "thumbnail" (graphic space). However, this system, which is relatively simple to use, presents difficulties, especially in the "typesetting" of thumbnails. From the written productions and related thoughts of deaf signers, we analyze the thumbnails which cause reading problems, showing that these hindrances can be ascribed to human factors, to SW intrinsic characteristic, or even to "voluntary faults" of the writer. Finally, we consider whether or not to speak of "misspellings" in SW, since a true "standard" does not exist yet: in fact, in SW a subjective criterion, "readability", replaces the objectivity of the "norm".
