SignWriting List
January 2, 2014

Thank you, Nancy, very much, for posting these two examples, from your translation and writing of the Book of Acts in American Sign Language.

For those who are new to the SignWriting List, Nancy is just a few books away from completing the ASL translation of the entire New Testament, written in the SignWriting Script, based on the English New Living Translation. You can read her translations on ASLGospel.org, or in SignPuddle Online.

The ASL in these examples is written in vertical columns using three Lanes. Lanes show weight-shifting of the body … If the body’s weight shifts to the right side, then the signs are placed in the Right Lane. If the body’s weight shifts to the left side, then the signs are written in the Left Lane. And if the body’s weight remains center and does not shift, then signs are written in the Center Lane.

When the shoulders are turned within one phrase, to show facing the corner, the turned shoulder line only needs to be written once within one phrase…The body remains facing the corner, even if some signs do not re-write the turned shoulders, until the reader sees a pause (comma) or period to end the phrase.

Again, thank you, Nancy, for posting these two examples - I love reading it ;-)

I too hope this helps, Dali -

Val ;-)
