SignWriting Symposium...Preparing your presentations...

I will need a LIBRAS interpreter for my presentation. The sign examples are all from LIBRAS but I am not fluent in the language and mine may be a lively discussion for ordering signs. My Portuguese is passable, but with a lively discussion, anyone on here may really need an interpreter for LIBRAS and Portuguese.

SignWriting has progressed so far since I first learned it and the fine-tuning of this system for things like alphabetic printed dictionaries is going to be a challenge to anyone. I feel I have principles that can be followed, but others may have their own ideas.

SignWriting List
June 3, 2014

Good morning everyone, and Claudia!
I am delighted you are presenting first, Claudia - You will educate us as to how to do an online Symposium ...

I really mean that…we are new here to online presentations and symposiums…this is our learning year…so your advice is welcome. And so is everyone else’s too -

No worries - do as you wish and I will accommodate whatever you choose do -

I am so looking forward to seeing your presentation, Claudia - you are doing important work -

I have never managed 40 presentations from 12 countries before, with such a wide variety of languages and needs for interpreters - that is another reason that I need your help too - we need to talk about interpreters for more than 12 languages …

So first of all…you are welcome to do what you want regarding your written papers, documents, slides and videos -

If the deadline of July 7th does not work for you, then ignore the deadline. Call it a guideline. Because I am working alone, creating 40 web pages for people which should serve as a backup for their presentation, I figured I could use two weeks to post everyone’s work before the actual live presentation…but I can also post it after the presentation is over too - and of course that will be fine if that is best for you -

So, we need to talk about interpreters… Do you need a French Sign Language or an Italian Sign Language interpreter? International Sign Language interpreters, although they did an excellent job at the time, were not all understood at our Symposium 2005 in Belgium (I received complaints)…and I am pretty sure, with 12 countries participating that most people will not understand interpreters from other countries…

there are live-captioning tools available on Google Hangouts, but even then I understand the live captions do not get recorded in the YouTube video - so obviously we will still need to caption the videos later after the Symposium is over -

So you are correct that a lot of these documents will be posted on web pages after the Symposium is over - so take your time!

How should interpreters be handled?

Val ;-)

Hello Val,

I'm used to do this for my work's meetings) and make everyone see the presentation in the same time I speak... and then I can send you the presentation if you want to put it in an archive of the SWS2014....
>Sorry but it's the fist time that at conference it is asked to me to have a "last-version" presentation so soon... even when there are interpreters, I just have to give a "almost ready" presentation 1 week ago.
