SignWriting List
January 11, 2014
Hi Ingvild, Adam and Steve -
Sure nice to chat with all of you - I have been getting a little lonely for messages I guess, and instead getting spam to read - the messages were in German, Russian, Arabic and a message written in English, but specifically from a company in China…and the subject matters were very diverse and off topic…They were also posted in the Archives, but I just deleted them on the server, although the spam messages are still in the Archive 3 which is a mirror of our List on LinguistList.org…which has also changed its url, so boy, there is so much to do just to keep up with the world!
I hope it is true that these spam messages are sent to me as the moderator and not to List members - I am glad at least to know that you have not been burdened by them-
Thank you Ingvild, for writing - I miss you so much!
And Happy New Year, Adam and everyone -
We will have a great 2015 I know!
Val ;-)

Hi Val,
I haven't noticed the spam emails you talk about on the list. Maybe my email client is filtering them?
Is it possible the list software is only sending those emails to you? Maybe they are being flagged and sent to the list moderator only?
Regards,
-Steve

If they do become top many we would have to come up with a codeword in the topic to know it is something we want to read and share. If in the future another natural moderator should arise we might return to the qustion.

>>> The SW List has always been an open list. Anyone can join and post a message. All messages are supposed to relate to SignWriting or to writing sign languages, or other related topics, such as sign language linguistics, Deaf Education and research…and to date, I have been really happy to see how we have had very few people break that unspoken rule…
>>>
>>> In the past few months, I have noticed a few messages from commercial organizations, posting messages related to commerce rather than our topic.
>>>
>>> I looked at the Security Panel on the ListServe software, which is posted by Valencia College in Florida, and it appears that the only other solution is for us to make the SignWriting List “moderated”, which would mean that I would have to review every message before it is posted, and I do not want to do that…I am afraid it will be less friendly, and people will not be so happy because their messages will not post immediately and in my situation I cannot promise when I will have the time to moderate the messages..
>>>
>>> Therefore I am voting to keep the SignWriting List as it is…open and free to join without moderation…and we can hope that the commercial entities who have been abusing the List will learn that they should not post messages off topic.
>>>
>>> Do you agree with me? Or do you want another solution?
>>>
>>> It is my hope that this List will be vibrant and active again - but on the right topics ;-)
