[Sw-l] Question on Facebook about handshape

Hmm, that’s a very good question. As I see it, the difference between the two handshapes is that the circle (002) has the tips of both the thumb and baby finger touching each other whereas the hinge (004) has the pads of both the thumb and baby touching each other. The photo in question has the tip of the thumb touching the pad of the baby finger. As far as I know, there isn’t a specific hand symbol for that handshape. (The square (001) is the only other symbol that I can think of, but it has the pad of the thumb of the top side (or nail side) of the baby finger.)

Personally, if I had to choose one of the two symbols (01-06-002 and 01-06-004), I would pick the second. My reasoning is because it is more important where the contact is on the baby finger than it is on the thumb. So the fact that the thumb touches the pad of the baby finger is more important than the tip of the thumb touching the baby finger.

However, if the language that is being written has a need for succinct difference between 01-06-004 and this handshape, then it might not be good choice.
