So glad to see your messages on the SignWriting List again, Adam! I guess the Spring semester is over at San Diego State University ;-)
Thank you for helping, because I really do need your input. I agree that the second handshape, 004, is the best as well, because there is actually a video of the sign posted on Facebook, and there is a movement brushing up twice with the thumb contacting the baby finger - so the 004 handshape works much better for that. We need to write the sign from the video ;-)
Can we post Facebook videos on the SignWriting List? I don’t know how to do that….
You will find the video posted on the SignWriting Discussion Group on Facebook, by Sutthikhun Phaengphongsai <https://www.facebook.com/groups/1888553961464543/user/100001004503477/?__cft__[0]=AZUhyLTbATijg6_Z6_7GFN-uUkg3YJXDCbo2DOX8_-mwi_9A-F2fIYtJY1fcJ9-04dNVlJOpSdmyqgzm6W9iKv6Z4eCrGRfIqjRjz8w7Nj9uSLi5JEjyHMDSFVvHAtA5Ft1InArTSgHQqa9d5FEYR8WA&__tn__=-]C%2CP-R>.

Thanks again, Adam ;-)

As I see it, the difference between the two handshapes is that the circle (002) has the tips of both the thumb and baby finger touching each other whereas the hinge (004) has the pads of both the thumb and baby touching each other. The photo in question has the tip of the thumb touching the pad of the baby finger. As far as I know, there isn’t a specific hand symbol for that handshape. (The square (001) is the only other symbol that I can think of, but it has the pad of the thumb of the top side (or nail side) of the baby finger.)

My reasoning is because it is more important where the contact is on the baby finger than it is on the thumb. So the fact that the thumb touches the pad of the baby finger is more important than the tip of the thumb touching the baby finger.
