Please see attached diagram -

In general, the Index Finger is oftentimes straight, long, and on the side of the square.

In general, the Middle Finger is oftentimes straight, long, and in the middle of the square.

In general, the Baby Finger is oftentimes short, at a diagonal, and on the opposite side of the square than the Index Finger. And sometimes it is thickened so we notice it when reading quickly.

In general, the Thumb is short, straight and in the middle of the square.

BUT…. (big grin) …. as you can see by the attached diagram, this is not true much of the time!

And these are only squares - many of these numbers are really written with circle hand symbols, or angle handshapes.

So instead of trying to find logic, instead think of reading something quickly. Recognizing hand symbols quickly, when reading a novel or newspaper or the New Testament in written ASL - what does your eye look for? It looks for Finger-Groups or Finger configurations….

Look at the attached diagram - and I will try to explain more tomorrow - mainly Carlos and Adam are correct - it is intuitive and a matter of reading a lot of symbols - the first symbol we start with in the Index finger, so it is the strong one that we base a lot of symbols on...
