Dear colleagues and friends,

I just received the very sad news from Professor Olga Zavyalova in
Moscow that Sergey Evgenyevich Yakhontov passed away during the night
of January 27/28 at the age of 91. Земля тебе пухом!

As all of you know, Sergey Evgenyevich was a giant in Old Chinese
reconstruction, comparative Sino-Tibetan and many other areas of East
Asian historical linguistics, whose work has deeply influenced several
generations of scholars in the Soviet Union/Russia and abroad. The
collected works cum Festschrift produced by Professor Zavyalova and
colleagues on the occasion of his 90th birthday on December 13, 2016,
contains a photograph, sketches of his academic life and a complete
bibliography up to 2009. I am attaching the relevant pages.
