Dear all,
For those of you attending the ICSTLL and/or HLS in Sydney later this
month, please come along to this public event, organized by Mark Post and
I. Since food and drink will be provided, registration is essential (see
link below).
The Thousand Tongues in the Heart of Asia: Indigenous Languages of the
Himalayas
Spread across five countries in the heart of Asia, the Himalayas are home
to hundreds of languages, and are one our world’s major centers of
linguistic diversity. Come join us at this special event as part of the
International Year of Indigenous Languages, as we celebrate the Indigenous
languages of the Himalayas, and look at some of the challenges they face in
the twenty-first century. You will hear from, and have a chance to speak
with, people from across the Himalayas, as well as internationally
recognized linguistic experts about the past, present and future of the
region’s Indigenous languages. Find out how political tensions, increasing
mobility, climate change, and other issues are putting pressure on the
Himalayas’ Indigenous peoples and their languages, and hear how communities
are working to protect and revitalize their linguistic heritage.
Discussants:
Tsering Shakya (University of British Columbia), George van Driem
(University of Bern), Charisma K Lepcha (Sikkim University), Yankee Modi
(University of Sydney), Henriette Daudey (La Trobe University), Tshering
Lama O’Gorman (Australian Himalayan Foundation)
