[Tibeto-burman-linguistics] Abstract of O.Thog Tibetan Grammar

Hi All,
I would like to share with everyone the English abstract for a PhD thesis (written in Chinese) that has just been submitted to Shanghai Normal University. As far as I know, it is the first grammatical description of an endangered language using Radical Construction Grammar as the interpretive framework, so it is quite experimental. The student was quite brave to attempt this given that it will be sent to reviewers who are used to Structuralist descriptions. RCG is a very different way of conceptualising language, and this makes it very difficult for people trained in Structuralism (basically everyone) to understand. But it fits in much better with older approaches, such as Romanticism (e.g. W. von Humboldt), which are also wholistic and integrationist, as well as integrationist approaches such as Roy Harris’. The thesis is

Lu Lin (盧琳)， A study of O.Thog Tibetan Grammar—based on the principles of “Radical Construction Grammar” and the theory of “The Creation of Meaning”（俄托藏语专题研究—基于“激进构式语法”及“意义创造论”）    

I would also like to praise the student, Lu Lin, a young woman of slight stature, for the incredible fieldwork done to complete this fieldwork, working as a yak herder at 4200 meters for eight months, carrying yak dung and doing other hard work in intense cold and in a reduced oxygen environment, but by doing this she learned to use the language in everyday life on the plateau and develop a very good knowledge of the language and culture.
