Hi All,
Recently an excellent book of Chinese translations of Prof. Jerry Norman’s major works, plus reader’s guides to each of the articles by the major scholars in the field who have been developing Norman’s approach and applying it successfully, finally allowing us to make progress in understanding the development of the many Sinitic linguistic varieties. The book is
《罗杰瑞卷》(《中西学术名篇精读 7》),柯蔚南、韩哲夫、梅祖麟、秋谷裕幸、沈瑞清读解。上海:中西书局,2026.
For those who prefer to read English and are interested in the development of the Sinitic varieties, I am attaching the English originals of the first chapter, a translation of Norman 2014 "A Model for Chinese Dialect Evolution”, plus South Coblin’s “A Reader’s Guide to Jerry Norman’s “A Model for Chinese dialect development”. Coblin’s article can also be fruitfully read as a stand-alone article by anyone interested in the methodology of Chinese historical linguistics.
