The 9th International Congress of Finno-Ugric Studies was held from 7 - 12
August 2000 in Tartu, Estonia. Congresses have been held every 5 years
since 1960. They have become the biggest and most important forum in
Uralistics.
In his closing words Tõnu Seilenthal, Chair of Estonian Committee of
Finno-Ugrists, President of the Congress, and President of the
International Committee for the Finno-Ugric Congresses, read the following
resolution:
"The International Committee for the Finno-Ugric Congresses had adopted a
Request to support the full inclusion of the Finno-Ugric transcription into
future character set standards. Full support of Finno-Ugric transcription
in the ISO/IEC 10646 standard means, for instance, input and output of
Uralic language material without technical compromises, transmission of
Uralic language material via E-mail and Internet (e.g. in a Web
publication)."
This resolution should leave no one in doubt that the full inclusion of
FUPA into ISO/IEC 10646 and Unicode is supported and needed by the users.
It is hoped that we can now fully concentrate on the concrete problems that
not yet have been solved in the proposal by Michael Everson, Klaas Ruppel,
and Trond Trosterud.
