>From June 14 to June 20, 2002 a course for advanced students will
take place in Uppsala, Sweden, regarding the small languages of
the Baltic States and Scandinavia. There will be an international
team of teachers who discuss both the diversity of languages in the
area and the possibility of using information technology for
supporting these languages.
There will be place for a limited number of advanced students
from the different countries. Accomodation, breakfast and lunch will
be provided, and the elected students will also get their travel
expenses to and from Uppsala refunded. A set of reading material
will be made available in advance, and this should be studied
before the beginning of the course, which counts as five weeks of
study.

Here is a brief course description:

IT-SUPPORT FOR NORDIC-BALTIC LINGUISTIC DIVERSITY

Time: 14.06.02 - 21.06.02

Location: Uppsala, Sweden

Course description.
This Nordic Summer School will enhance research and training in
small languages spoken in the Nordic and Baltic countries. It aims
at calling linguists' attention to the actual tasks of language
maintenance in this area and furthermore to train and assist them
in using information technology in the description and
documentation of small languages.

Classes to be offered at the planned Nordic course will focus on
three topics. A cross-linguistic overview of the language situation in
the Nordic and Baltic countries will be given with special emphasis
on the linguists' role in the maintenance of the linguistic diversity.
Issues of maintenance and revitalisation of endangered languages
will be presented. The use of IT in the maintenance of linguistic
diversity will be illustrated.

The training course is planned to have an interdisciplinary
character. It will bring together linguists involved in studying
different languages in the Nordic and Baltic countries and
specialists of information and communication technology and
multimedia publishing. The planned combination of classes is not
offered in one course at any Nordic university.

The training course will improve contacts between researchers
studying small languages in the Nordic and Baltic countries and to
enhance cooperation in utilizing available recources and expertise
in university training.
