Background
This event is arranged to celebrate the newly published cultural
encyclopaedia
of the Saami. On this occasion we also want to have a seminar to honour the
diversity and uniqueness of the cultures of Saami people and other
indigenous
cultures.
The aim of the Saami culture encyclopaedia is to emphasize the preservation
and
the development of the cultures of the indigenous Saami people and to
promote a
widespread distribution of researched information on it. In today's rapidly
changing world it is also important to create ways to prevent the social and
cultural marginalization of indigenous peoples living in marginal
conditions.
Thus one of the most important intentions of the encyclopaedia is to
strengthen
the identity of the Saami people and to support their awareness of their own
cultural heritage. To achieve this intention it is also important to present
minorities within the Saami people, such as the Russian Saami, who until now
have remained in the margins even in the ongoing research on Saami culture.
On this basis, the aim of the seminar is to discuss the future of indigenous
peoples and their challenges in facing modernity, while trying to preserve
their traditions and ethnicity. The theme is approached from the perspective
of
multidisciplinary studies. Multidisciplinarity is an integral requirement
for
discussion on identity, ethnicity and culture. The lecturers are experts on
Saami culture and history, and the guest of honour of the seminar is Ms
Victoria Tauli Corpuz from Philippines. Ms Victoria Tauli Corpuz was elected
as
chairperson of the Permanent Forum on indigenous issues of the United
Nations
in May 2005.
