Cognitive and Functional Perspectives on Dynamic Tendencies in Languages.
University of Tartu, 29 May, 2008 - 01 June, 2008

Theme session: Mood and Modality in Uralic languages

Organizers: Irina Nikolaeva (SOAS, London) and Anne Tamm (University of
Florence)

Uralic languages are known to be relatively rich in morphological moods,
however the inventory of modal meanings is not stable across languages, and
moods do not map neatly from one language to another. This makes modality a
difficult aspect of language description and implies that any serious study
of mood or modality in a particular language needs to be located within a
cross-linguistic perspective.

The theme session intends to highlight the synchronic and diachronic issues
related to mood and modality in Uralic, as viewed from both a descriptive
and theoretical perspective. We especially encourage papers that take a
functional and cognitive approach to language, although linguists working
within other theoretical frameworks are also welcome to apply.

Among the issues to be considered will be:

1. What do the modal systems of particular Uralic languages look like
synchronically? How does modality interact with other categories of their
grammar,
such as tense and aspect?

2. What role does mood and modality play in the interfaces between
morphosyntax, semantics and pragmatics?

3. Which explanatory approaches or theoretical models are relevant for the
analysis of modality in Uralic?

4. How do Uralic languages contribute to the typology of mood and modality?

5. What about modality is subject to change, and why?

The session will feature the organizers' presentations, but there is room
for additional talks. Abstracts for 30 minute presentations are invited.
Papers will be selected on a competitive basis. Abstracts should be
submitted via email to Irina Nikolaeva at:

irina_a_nikolaeva at yahoo.com or in3 at soas.ac.uk

Abstracts should include the title of the contribution, name(s),
affiliation(s)
and e-mail address(es) of author(s) and must not exceed one page, including
references. We are hoping to publish an edited volume based on the workshop
presentations.

Important deadlines:

Deadline for Abstract Submission: 1 January, 2008
Abstract Acceptance Notification: 15 January, 2008
Conference: 29 May, 2008 - 01 June, 2008
